Gut Food FAQ's

All your Gut Food questions answered!

A prebiotic is a fundamental aspect of gut health. Prebiotics are indigestible fibres that help healthy bacteria grow in your gut and nourish beneficial intestinal microflora to help your digestive system work better.  Most often found as compounds in fibre-rich plant foods, they work in the gastrointestinal tract to foster the growth or activity of beneficial microorganisms which improve digestion, enhance nutrient absorption and strengthen your immune system.

Prebiotics function as a food source for your gut’s microorganisms – they are like ‘dinner’ for your probiotics! They need to bypass digestion to make it all the way down to your colon, where the microorganisms metabolise and ferment the prebiotics to survive. However, most prebiotics on the market can feed both harmful and beneficial gut bacteria, which can exacerbate digestive issues. Gutsi® Gut Food is designed to only feed friendly bacteria.

External factors such as taking medications, antibiotics, stress, and unhealthy eating habits can disrupt the healthy balance of our gut bacteria, which can result in gut issues such a gas, bloating, changes in bowel movements as well as health challenges such as chronic inflammation, leaky gut, eczema and migraines. If there is an imbalance of bacteria in the gut, a prebiotic supplement can support the growth of anaerobic bacteria in order to restore healthy bacterial balance and diversity.

When prebiotics are broken down into microorganisms in your gut by the metabolism and fermentation process, different short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are created depending on the kind of prebiotic. SCFAs are beneficial as they provide energy to your colon cells, help with mucus production, support a balanced inflammatory response and healthy immunity. Taking a prebiotic supplement is also an effective way to add more fibre to the diet, which is essential for a healthy and diverse microbiome as well as regular bowel movements.

The benefits of prebiotics are wide-ranging. They:

Help regulate bowel movements (frequency and consistency);

Produce neurotransmitters that facilitate communication between your gut and your brain to trigger mood changes and other processes;

Stimulate your body to make hormones that aid in appetite as well as appetite suppression;

Help your bones absorb calcium and phosphorus, which can improve and support healthy bone density;

Improve immune system function;

Enhance the body’s anti-inflammatory response;

Increase production of good bacteria;

Decrease bad bacteria that cause disease.

All commercial prebiotic formulas claim to feed good gut bacteria. However, the problem is most also feed the undesirable strains as well. Some experts now estimate that 80-90% of people have a chronic gut imbalance or leaky gut. Adding an untested, non-specific prebiotic to a pre-existing overgrowth can worsen the harmful effects. Symptoms such as bloating, gas, die-off toxicity, and irregular bowel movements can be tell-tale signs. However, Gutsi® Gut Food selectively feeds only the good gut bacteria! It is the first prebiotic in the retail market strategically designed to feed beneficial keystone bacteria by using 3 specific oligosaccharides – and it has the clinical studies backing up those results!

Formulated with Precision Prebiotic™ technology, this 3-in-1 fibre feeds friendly bacteria, bulks stool, helps eliminate various forms of waste including bacterial waste, supports satiety and weight management, maintains a healthy intestinal barrier function and supports immune function. Gut Food reinforces the health-supportive microbial changes created by SporeBiotic™ and supplies a full daily prebiotic dose (2g) for optimal health.

It is important to reseed and balance the gut first with the uniquely powerful spore-based probiotic and antioxidant before adding in the precision prebiotics in Gut Food. Although designed to enhance each other, these two products perform completely different functions in the gut. The goal is to take both together, in the correct order, to achieve the best results.

Introducing Bacillus spores to the gut dramatically increases the presence of your commensal bacteria and your keystone species of Akkermansia muciniphila, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Bifidobacteria. These bacteria start the reconditioning and rebalancing work, which is the root cause of gut dysbiosis.

The second phase is to bloom a healthier microbiome. Your new healthy microbiome requires additional components to really flourish! The first tool to support the blooming process are prebiotics. Not just any prebiotics, the non-digestible oligosaccharides in Gut Food are some of the most important prebiotics that feed microbes – it’s their fundamental purpose.

For peak, long-term immune and digestive support linked to gut microbiome wellness, take SporeBiotic™ for at least 4 weeks before introducing Gut Food.

Gutsi® SporeBiotic™ probiotic + antioxidant introduces transient, gut-cleaning bacteria to our permanent microbial residents. Arriving 99.99% alive, these Bacillus spore bacteria spend the next 3 weeks slowly travelling the intestinal tube from top to bottom, killing pathogens and increasing low populations of beneficial bacteria along the way. Upon getting excreted out, the spore probiotic bacteria leave behind a much healthier and more balanced gut population – an important step for the addition of the Gut Food prebiotics.

Gut Food prebiotics + fibre is a strategically formulated superfood for your permanent gut residents, specifically 3 beneficial keystone bacteria strains – Akkermansia muciniphila, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Bifidobacteria. Gut Food provides nutrition in the form of non-digestible oligosaccharides for your permanent, protective gut residents. In fact, a clinical study shows adding Gut Food to SporeBiotic™ more than doubles the good gut bacterial population in just two weeks!

Gutsi® Gut Food selectively feeds beneficial bacteria like Akkermansia muciniphila, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Bifidobacteria. These keystone bacteria are very important for human health, but their populations can be easily diminished by antibiotics, stress, glyphosate, and other environmental toxins.

  • Akkermansia muciniphila. A. muciniphila plays an important role in metabolism and has been shown to promote fat loss. A ‘cross feeder’ probiotic, it consumes mucins and turns them into short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are used to fuel other strains of healthy bacteria. Low levels of A. muciniphila have been associated with obesity, diabetes, liver disease, cardiometabolic diseases, and low-grade inflammation.
  • Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. F. prausnitzii can increase the production of butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that can relieve intestinal inflammation. Low levels of F. prausnitzii have been associated with irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, coeliac disease, and chronic constipation.
  • Bifidobacteria. Bifidobacteria can also increase production of butyrate and promote lean body mass. Low levels of Bifidobacteria have been associated with obesity, diabetes, coeliac disease, allergic asthma, dermatitis, IBD, chronic fatigue syndrome, and psoriasis.

Gut Food was specifically formulated to feed only beneficial bacterial and reinforce these keystone strains without feeding the harmful, dysbiotic flora which can exacerbate digestive issues.

The recent discovery of Akkermansia muciniphila is a scientific breakthrough. Akkermansia is a keystone species that is highly important for metabolic and immune health and adequate levels of Akkermansia protect against more than a dozen chronic conditions. However, an Akkermansia probiotic is likely NOT going to increase the Akkermansia levels in your large bowel.

Probiotic supplements for Akkermansia are almost non-existent and are not well-studied. Unfortunately, you cannot take it as a supplementary probiotic as it is a strict anaerobe that does not exist or function outside of the body. Additionally, it cannot survive the gastric system and it does not colonise the gut as it cannot sustain itself.

Most people in the developed world have very low levels of Akkermansia muciniphila. Levels of Akkermansia are inversely correlated to everything under the metabolic syndrome spectrum. This means that if you have high Akkermansia, you are protected against obesity, diabetes, cardio metabolic syndrome, etc. The best way to increase Akkermansia is by increasing polyphenol and oligosaccharide prebiotic intake and practicing intermittent fasting or being in ketosis for a portion of the day. Clinical research has shown that supplementing with the aforementioned nutrients and lifestyle factors can grow Akkermansia 10-100 times higher within three weeks. Being able to regrow your endogenous Akkermansia is contingent on having a healthy and diverse microbiome supported with the right nutrients, a balanced diet, and a healthy lifestyle.

Prebiotics and probiotics work together to encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria that can improve digestion and support the immune system. However, prebiotics and probiotics perform completely different functions in the gut, so prebiotics do not replace the need to use a probiotic.

Gutsi® Gut Food is made with oligosaccharides from rBST-free cow’s milk lactose. Recombinant somatotropin, or rBST (previously called bovine growth hormone), is a genetically engineered hormone injected into dairy cows to increase milk production.

A prebiotic supplement helps fill-in dietary gaps and boosts the efficacy of natural as well as supplemental probiotics, supporting gut integrity, nutrient absorption and gastrointestinal health. Typical prebiotics feed both good and bad microflora. Gutsi® Gut Food prebiotics use Precision Prebiotic™ technology to nourish beneficial microflora and reduce harmful strains for optimal gut support.

Anyone who is interested in strengthening and nourishing their gut microbiome by increasing the diversity and presence of keystone bacterial species and taking charge of their wellbeing should take Gut Food. Gutsi’s targeted prebiotics promote the growth of beneficial microbes, support microbial diversity, fuel colonocytes, encourage regular bowel movements, and influence health in many other ways. Evidence suggests that prebiotic supplements may also be helpful for those who experience chronic constipation, prediabetes, Type 2 diabetes and more.

If you have Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) or FODMAPs intolerance, prebiotics are not recommended.

Gutsi® Gut Food prebiotics do NOT actually contain dairy or corn. It contains oligosaccharides derived from lactose (which comes from milk) and corn cobs (which no one eats).

Although the galactooligosaccharide (GOS) in Gut Food is from dairy, there are no dairy proteins or fat in this product; the oligosaccharides are purified extracts and there are no dairy allergens left in the final product. A dairy allergy is reacting to the proteins in dairy (whey, casein, beta-lactoglobulin), not the the carbohydrates in these foods. This product is strictly made from carbohydrates from various sources. The supplier of the galactooligosaccharide has found that the GOS derived from lactose actually improves the body’s ability to digest lactose, therefore improving lactose intolerance, which is not a sensitivity or an allergy – it is a lack of enzymes [1].

The xylooligosaccharide (XOS) ingredient from the corn cobs is a carbohydrate and not the proteins found in corn. We generally tell people to err on the safe side and avoid it if they have a true food allergy to corn, but if it’s just a sensitivity to corn, most people have no issues.

This supplement is high in gut beneficial FODMAPS, however it may not be tolerated by individuals requiring a low FODMAP diet.

Oligosaccharides are the O in FODMAPs, so if you are trying to avoid all FODMAPs, then you should not use this product. We do not recommend low FODMAPs diets as a long-term solution, as the lack of diversity can be very limiting to the gut microbiome.

While our products are not tested on pregnant or breastfeeding women, Gutsi® Gut Food should be compatible with pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Gutsi® Gut Food is suitable for children. Since the gut microbiome is fully developed by age 3, children over this age can take the suggested dosing equivalent of 4 capsules per day.

Ages 4+: start with 2 capsules daily, with or without a meal for a week. Then increase to 4 capsules daily, with or without a meal, as tolerated. For children under 4, please consult with your healthcare practitioner.

If the child cannot swallow capsules, they can be opened and contents added to food or drink.

Gutsi® Gut Food is not suitable for vegans as it contains an ingredient derived from milk. However, there are no dairy allergens left in the product.

Yes! However, due to the fibre content in Gutsi® Gut Food, please take this supplement 2 hours away from any medication.

Gutsi® Gut Food is a great product to take on its own, or as part of the Gut Reset protocol.

Think of consuming your daily dose of Gut Food like watering a garden. It is most effective to give your beneficial gut bacteria regular amounts of this nutritious “superfood” every day.

Most people benefit from introducing Gut Food gradually. When the prebiotics and fibre start working and feeding your microbiota, they’ll start creating more gas, so some people may want to start slowly so as not to feel bloated or gassy.

Because your body operates on a circadian rhythm, the microorganisms in your gut are more active during the day; thusly, sensitive people may not want to take this product in the evening.

Gutsi® Gut Food is more effective than other prebiotic brands because it feeds only your good gut bacteria. Begin by taking a half dose daily (2 capsules), then work up to a full dose after one week.

You can either take all 4 capsules at once or split the dose by taking 2 capsules at breakfast or lunch and 2 capsules with dinner.

Sensitive people or those with longstanding digestive issues may want to start with ¼ dose (1 capsule) and gradually build up to a full dose.

Gut bacteria digest fibre through a natural metabolic process called fermentation. One of the byproducts of the fermentation process is the production of gas. It is usual for most people to produce anywhere from 200ml to 1.5L of gas per day – they don’t call it the GAS-trointestinal tract for nothing! About a third of this gas production can be utilised by other gut bacteria, the rest is passed from the body. When adding new fibre sources into the diet, the quicker gut microbes digest it, the greater the potential for gas production, but when gut diversity is lacking, this off-gassing may not be as well utilised by the microbiome.

Gutsi® Gut Food is made up of three different prebiotic fibres which creates a more complex fibre source for our gut microbes to ferment and metabolise, resulting in a slower fermentation process and less gas production. It also encourages a greater diversity of microbes in the gut, and this diversity is also key to reducing the side effects of the fermentation process (gas & bloating) because the broader range of microbes with their different metabolic enzymes can more effectively utilise the off-gassing of the fermentation process.

This formula is designed to not cause bloating. Regardless, we still recommend titrating as it may cause bloating or digestive symptoms in some individuals. However, this will not last forever – it just means that you need to go slower. Start with ¼ dose daily and take with a large glass of water, then increase by one capsule every 3 days until you can maintain the full dose comfortably. If bloating occurs, go back to your previously tolerated dosage and stay there for a week before increasing the dose. You may also wish to try splitting your dose throughout the day, or incorporate digestive support such as lemon, apple cider vinegar, bitters or enzymes.

Although not designed to aggravate SIBO, adding more fibre is a change for your body and it can cause temporary bloating if added too quickly. You may want to begin dosing in the evening to help with this as you work your way up to the recommended intake.

For best results, add Gut Food once you’ve taken SporeBiotic™ for 2-4 weeks.
