Gutsi® FAQ's

Probiotics are the fastest-growing category in the supplement industry. Recent research done by the National Institutes for Health defined probiotics as:

  1. An organism that is normally occurring in the digestive tract
  2. Is administered in quantities higher than what normally occurs in the digestive tract
  3. The organism must be able to survive in the digestive tract

There are almost no probiotics in the marketplace that meet all three of these criteria besides Gutsi® SporeBiotic

Gutsi® SporeBiotic™ is a 100% spore-based probiotic and the only probiotic that supports a healthy intestinal barrier. Most probiotics on the market contain some combination of lactobacillus and/or bifidobacteria. These are often single-strain, single-effect probiotics that have a difficult time surviving the gastric system’s harsh environment. The spore-forming strains found in SporeBiotic™ are commensal gut organisms that are uniquely built to survive harsh environments like the digestive system, supporting gut colonization. These spores have also been shown to maintain balanced immune function, support healthy gut integrity, and support healthy serum lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels. SporeBiotic™ boasts 100% survivability throughout the GI tract and provides vital support for a variety of human imbalances and dysfunctions.

  • Supports digestion, immunity, mood, energy levels, sleep, and skin
  • Delivers beneficial antioxidants at the site of absorption
  • Survives digestion and balances the gut by supporting microbial diversity

Gutsi® SporeBiotic™ differs from other probiotics on the market in a number of ways:

  1. Survivability – SporeBiotic™ contains strains of Bacillus spores that have been shocked back into their resilient spore form. In this form, the bacteria are impervious to heat, light, acid, pressure, radiation, and lack of oxygen. This unique feature allows SporeBiotic™ to naturally survive the harsh gastric system.
  2. Carotenoid production – Carotenoids are the beneficial antioxidants found in coloured fruits and vegetables. Carotenoids from dietary supplements, however, are poorly absorbed, and most people do not eat as many coloured fruits and vegetables as they should. For these reasons, supplementation with a carotenoid-rich probiotic is highly important. These beneficial bacteria support the production of high levels of carotenoids right at the site of absorption, thus allowing for optimum uptake into the body.
  3. Increased microbial diversity – the bacterial strains in SporeBiotic™ have been shown to increase the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), which act as prebiotics to other gut bacteria. In this way, SporeBiotic™ balances microbial diversity in the gut.
  4. Immune support – Studies show that Bacillus subtilis supports the development of gut associated lymphoid tissue gut associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), which is critical to the formation of a properly functioning and robust immune system. SporeBiotic™ also supports the immune system by affecting Peyer’s patches function, as well as Toll-like receptors, in order to support pattern recognition, circulating T and B lymphocytes and regulatory T cells. The end result is a healthier gut lining and a stronger immune system that is better equipped to handle the issues that can arise due to unfavourable lifestyle and environmental factors.
  5. Metabolic reconditioning – Research has shown that the type of bacteria you have in your gut controls the types of food you crave and the number of calories your body will extract from the food you eat. These effects are realised by turning on crucial genes in the digestive tract that control our metabolic fate. SporeBiotic, in conjunction with a higher protein, low sugar, and fibre-rich diet, can support the body through modification of key genetic activation, to favour fat burn, reduce fat accumulation, and increase energy metabolism, satiety, and insulin sensitivity.

A healthy human gut. Spores are found naturally in the intestine of insects, animals, and humans. The spores used in Gutsi® SporeBiotic™ are kept in a bacteria bank at London University Royal Holloway.

No. Bacillus species are often considered soil organisms since their spores can be found there. The probiotic strains in Gutsi® SporeBiotic™ can survive in the soil, but they are not soil-based organisms (SBOs). SBOs are organisms meant to thrive in the soil. Unlike SBOs, the strains in SporeBiotic™ are natural, gut commensal organisms intended to thrive in the human gut.

Since Gutsi® SporeBiotic™ has 100% survivability in the gut, ideally the entire dose should reach the upper part of the large intestine, where it performs its action. Other probiotics containing lactobacillus and bifidobacterium species usually need to be supplemented at much higher doses to be present in the gut at much higher concentrations, as a substantial amount will die off during digestion.

The strains in Gutsi® SporeBiotic™ function differently to most other probiotic products on the market. If you have gut challenges or haven’t responded to other formulas, use SporeBiotic™ to take complete advantage of all the functions of a true probiotic.

Gutsi® SporeBiotic™ contains four pharmaceutical grade strains that each have unique functions, thus contributing to the overall effectiveness of the product. Below is a brief description of each:

  1. Bacillus indicus, HU36™ – The first carotenoid-rich probiotic strain offered to the dietary supplement market. An isolate from humans, B.indicus supports the production of high levels of powerful carotenoids (antioxidants) at the site of absorption. Carotenoids do not survive the gastric system well. B.indicus however, has demonstrated the ability to survive past the stomach acid and produce the carotenoids at their site of absorption in the gut.
  2. Bacillus clausii (SC-109) – This strain is the largest selling strain of prescription probiotics in the world. B.clausii has the ability to resist damage from a variety of antibiotics by going back into its spore state. SporeBiotic™ has the unique function of being a powerful supplement that can be used in adjunct with antibiotic therapy to keep the organisms balanced in the gut.
  3. Bacillus subtilis, HU58™ – B.subtilis has been extensively studied on a genetic and functional level. There are several probiotic products in the pharmaceutical and agricultural markets that utilize this powerful probiotic. One very interesting function of B.subtilis is its ability to produce 12 natural microbial fighters! B.subtilis offers SporeBiotic™ the ability to balance gut microbiota. In addition, B.subtilis has been shown to produce an enzyme called nattokinaseNattokinase is secreted from vegetative cells of B.subtilis and has been shown to support healthy blood pressurecholesterol, and fibrin levels. Along with nattokinaseB.subtilis also produces a number of other nutrients such as B vitamins and Vitamin K2. In addition, B.subtilis has immune supporting benefits.
  4. Bacillus coagulans (SC-208) – A very well studied probiotic in the spore family that offers a range of supportive benefits for gut related issues. B.coagulans also offers potent immune-boosting activity. B.coagulans has the unique ability to produce lactic acid, specifically the L+ optical isomer of lactic acid, which has been shown to support immune and gut function than the other forms of lactic acid produced by conventional probiotics. B.coagulans is also a tremendous colonizer and thus supports proper colonization of SporeBioticB.coagulans plays a key role in digestion of food and absorption of nutrients. B.coagulans adds another dimension to SporeBiotic, giving it a potent ability aid in digestion and support healthy levels of beneficial bacteria.

The strains in Gutsi® SporeBiotic™ can range in colour from white/yellow in appearance to black/gray-ish in colour. When mixed together, capsules can contain black flecks or a yellow hue. It is completely natural and colour variation is quite common from batch to batch. Our product is routinely tested a minimum of four times before it reaches the end consumer. SporeBiotic™ is a pure fermentation extract and with nature, there is no colour uniformity.

Some individuals can experience some digestive discomfort initially due to changes in gut bacteria. As with any product that is effective in restoring balance to an unhealthy intestinal tract, the chance for yoto experience Herxheimer reactions is possible. Because of this, we recommend that the dose be titrated up slowly to control detox reactions. Individuals with yeast and/or bacterial imbalances and major digestive issues are highly advised to consult with a health practitioner for education on proper dose protocol. This may include starting at ¼-½ capsule every other day and slowly titrating up to a full dose over a longer period of time. The most frequent symptoms reported are intestinal cramping and loose stools. Decreasing the dose should reduce any uncomfortable symptoms.

Ideally, Gutsi® SporeBiotic™ should be taken just after a meal – 10-20 mins after is optimal. The amino acids and carbohydrates in food help the spores move from their dormant spore state to their active vegetative state in the GI tract. Immune function may be best supported when the spores are made to germinate into their vegetative state in the upper GI tract, a situation that can be stimulated by the right nutrient conditions.

The upper part of the large intestine.

An upper limit has not been established and your healthcare provider should be consulted before administering more than the recommended dose.

Gutsi® SporeBiotic™ is intended for daily use. Bacillus bacteria are transient microorganisms, so they do not stay in the GI tract forever. After starting SporeBiotic, it typically takes about 21 days of daily supplementation to reach a steady-state concentration in the gut. Please note that the quality of one’s diet can also influence the inoculation and function of the spores in the gut. It is important to consume a diet low in refined sugars and high in fibre to facilitate a greater gut microbe diversity.

Absolutely! This is the recommended way to give Gutsi® SporeBiotic™ to children. Capsules can be opened and the spores mixed with any food or beverage, hot or cold.

Even with switching traditional probiotics every 3-6 months, it will not provide the diversity that Gutsi® SporeBiotic™ will. The spores shift the microbiota and favour the growth of good bacteria. It does this by:

  1. Producing a significant number of antibugs that balance gut microbiota
  2. Competitive exclusion of unwanted gut bacteria and microorganisms
  3. Supporting the growth of important commensal bacteria, such as lactobacillus

It is perfectly fine to take Gutsi® SporeBiotic™ with antimicrobials. Spore-forming microorganisms remain in the spore state in the presence of antimicrobials, and so they remain unaffected. Once the antimicrobials reduce in concentration or dissipate, the microorganisms will emerge from their spore state and start to function as intended.

Numerous individuals have taken this product during pregnancy and nursing without issues. If a pregnant or nursing mother has had strong reactions to specific substances or yeast overgrowth in the past, titrating up to the full dose is recommended. If unsure, please consult with your healthcare professional.

Slow titration is recommended with children, starting with ½ capsule per day for one week, working up to a full capsule. For ages under 4, please consult with your healthcare professional.

The strains are universal probiotics and are used in all types of animals and livestock throughout the world, including marine life. Take one capsule, pull it apart and sprinkle it on their food. If unsure, please consult with your veterinary professional.

Psychobiotics are live bacteria (probiotics) which, when ingested, support mental health through interactions with commensal gut bacteria. This also includes prebiotic support for bacteria that influence the bacteria-brain relationship.

Psychobiotics support emotional, cognitive, systemic and neural measures of health to achieve resilience to feelings of stress and nervous tension, as well as support a balanced mood and positive mental outlook.

Gutsi® MoodBiotic™ offers a breakthrough approach to balancing stress and overwhelm and uplifting your body and mind. Its efficacy comes from pairing the robustly researched psychobiotic Bifidobacterium longum 1714™(B. longum 1714™) with the brain nourishing and adaptogenic functions of two botanicals – L-theanine (Camellia sinensis) and Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata).

MoodBiotic™’s novel probiotic-based formula supports:

  • The gut-brain axis for truly holistic stress management
  • Balanced cortisol levels and neurotransmitter production
  • Emotional calm and mental clarity
  • Vibrant energy and peak cognition
  • Nervous system relaxation and restful, restorative sleep

The combined potency of B. longum 1714™ and herbal ingredients makes MoodBiotic™ the ultimate whole-body approach to managing stress. All ingredients are well-researched, tested and effective in supporting cognition, brain health, emotional calm and stress coping abilities.

Some customers see results in just a few days, while others need a little longer depending on their unique body, needs and current health status. Best results will come from taking MoodBiotic™ for at least 2 to 3 months.

Bifidobacterium longum 1714™ probiotic strains are native to the human gut, and have been robustly researched to support mood, sleep and cognition.

This patented strain is the most soundly researched mood support probiotic on the market and has demonstrated efficacy for supporting the ability to cope with occasional stress, balance mood, and uplift energy in human clinical trials, in as little as 4 weeks.

Clinical trials using B. longum 1714™ have shown positive results at 1B CFU. Gutsi®’s formula contains 2B CFU of B. longum 1714™, offering twice the clinically effective dose.

L-Theanine (Camellia sinensis) is a non-proteinogenic amino acid particularly found in green tea. This flavonoid is structurally similar to the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate in the brain, and is commonly used to support sleep disturbance, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, and psychological stress.

Studies suggest that L-theanine exerts its relaxant effect by supporting brain neurotransmitters such as GABA, dopamine and serotonin responsible for maintaining mood.  In addition to supporting nervous system relaxation, it may also have a role to play in maintaining nervous system function as we age through its supportive effect of antioxidant enzymes.

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a climbing vine with purple flowers. The functional part of the plant is in the aerial parts (the stem, leaves, flowers etc), which are usually collected when the plant flowers. The active constituents in Passionflower include flavonoids, eight-pyrone derivatives, and alkaloids. The potent Passionflower extract used in MoodBiotic™ is a 10:1 standardised extract.

A 10:1 extract has 10 times the unique active compound as the original herb in dried form. This means that 10g of the raw material is concentrated into 1g of powdered extract. The bigger the difference between the two numbers, the stronger the extract.

A standardised extract is made in a similar fashion as concentrated extracts, except that the mixture of plant and water is reduced to an exact concentration of an identified compound. This results in a highly concentrated extract. Standardised extracts are even more concentrated than most other powdered extracts, and provide verified quantities of the actual content of identified, active compounds in plants.

Absolutely! MoodBiotic™’s patented psychobiotic ingredient B. longum 1714™ is the most studied psychobiotic strain in the industry, with a robust body of evidence in support of its effects including in human clinical trials.

  1. longum 1714™ has been conclusively shown to support balanced hormone levels (including cortisol), stress resilience, cognitive measures including memory, focus and concentration, plus quality sleep, and vibrant energy.

In a human trial of 44 healthy adults on stress response and neural activation, 4-weeks supplementation of B. longum 1714™ was shown to support improved stress coping capacity and positive mood.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) measurement of brain activity demonstrated that supplementing with B. longum 1714™ encouraged theta brain wave activity. Theta brain wave activity is a form of active relaxation for the brain, commonly associated with good ideas, creativity and a positive mental state. It is typically the dominant brain wave activity when doing automatic repetitive tasks, such as showering, or doing the dishes, activities that don’t require conscious thought and where the brain is free to actively wander.

You can take Gutsi® MoodBiotic™ any time of day, with or without food. It can be taken once or twice per day – first dose ideally in the morning and if a second dose is taken, just before bed. You can take it continuously for a cumulative effect or as needed when stressful/sleepless situations arise. We do not suggest opening up the capsule to ingest as the herbs have an earthy, bitter taste that some people may find unpalatable.

This product has not been clinically tested in pregnancy or during breastfeeding. Please consult with your health practitioner prior to use.

Gutsi® MoodBiotic™ has been formulated using the highest safety and efficacy measures. However, because the botanical ingredients in this product have only been clinically tested in ages 8+, we suggest people first check with their health practitioner prior to use in children under 8.

While the ingredients in this product may support animals, Gutsi® MoodBiotic™ has not been clinically tested for pets, so we suggest people first check with their veterinarian prior to use.

Gutsi® MoodBiotic™ is designed as a standalone formulation that positively impacts stress and mood via the gut-brain axis. It does not take the place of Gutsi® SporeBiotic™, and many customers enjoy taking both SporeBiotic™ and MoodBiotic™ together for the mutually beneficial effect they both impart. Great on their own, and together, they provide an unmatched duo for total mind-body wellbeing.

Gutsi® MoodBiotic™ is ideal both for short-term episodic stress management as well as for long-term nervous system support, stress and mood care.

Whilst there are no known interactions between B. longum 1714™, L-theanine and Passionflower with common mood medications, we always suggest you check with your healthcare practitioner before adding a new product to your health regime.
