Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a climbing vine with purple flowers. The functional part of the plant is in the aerial parts (the stem, leaves, flowers etc), which are usually collected when the plant flowers. The active constituents in Passionflower include flavonoids, eight-pyrone derivatives, and alkaloids. The potent Passionflower extract used in MoodBiotic™ is a 10:1 standardised extract.
A 10:1 extract has 10 times the unique active compound as the original herb in dried form. This means that 10g of the raw material is concentrated into 1g of powdered extract. The bigger the difference between the two numbers, the stronger the extract.
A standardised extract is made in a similar fashion as concentrated extracts, except that the mixture of plant and water is reduced to an exact concentration of an identified compound. This results in a highly concentrated extract. Standardised extracts are even more concentrated than most other powdered extracts, and provide verified quantities of the actual content of identified, active compounds in plants.
